Beginning as a quest for a lever handle that can be comfortably approached from the end (consider when you're approaching a door from the side rather than front on), a visit to the Victoria & Albert Museum in Kensington found us drawn to the ancient pestle and mortar - ergonomic in its very purpose - forming a shorter lever with a comfortably bulbous end.
In use for thousands of years, first by the Kebaran culture in the Levant, the minimal change to the form of a pestle and mortar over time is a testament to its truly functional design.
These features have been translated into the gentle scoop of the rose, caving to the stem of the privacy turn, which grows from there into a soft, rounded form. Expressed in the chunkier proportions of the rose and grip is the heavy, sturdy nature of a traditional pestle and mortar.
If you're wondering which finish type to select, here's the key difference: living finishes gently patinate and change over time, ageing gracefully, whilst ageless finishes are either naturally unchanging, or boast a protective ceramic coating which mean the finish stays consistent.

Our thumbturns are made from finest grade solid brass and are hand-finished in all the standard Joseph Giles finishes.
Thumb turns are used in conjunction with a privacy lock & an emergency release (each supplied separately) and are usually installed on a hinged WC/bathroom door.
A thumbturn is fitted to the inside of a WC door and is twisted clockwise to engage a privacy lock and anti-clockwise to disengage a privacy lock, whilst an emergency release is installed on the outside of the door and can be used in the event of an emergency to open the door.
They are supplied as single items with an inner rose, a decorative cover rose, the necessary fixings, and a 5mm square spindle.
