Michaelis Boyd - Joseph Giles

Michaelis Boyd Collaboration

Michaelis Boyd

It has been our great pleasure to work alongside award-winning architecture and interior design studio Michaelis Boyd on creating some exquisite new product ranges.

Based in London and New York, Michaelis Boyd designers create spaces that stir emotions, inspire contemplation and help people reconnect with nature. Their works spans five continents, including heritage building restorations and renovations and new property builds of luxury hotels and private members’ clubs.

The forward-thinking approach to design exhibited by Michaelis Boyd was particularly well suited to Joseph Giles’ own devotion to innovation.

Introducing the Scala

Reverberating with echoes of art deco, the stepped design for our Scala range of door handles and pulls is one of the most charismatic we’ve ever worked on. The angular split-finish lever sits flush inside a sleek, cylindrical rose-less stem – the two tones providing a beautiful contrast to accentuate the form. You can handpick both finishes from our signature metallic selection to create an ideal fit with your interior project.

The Scala range takes its cue from the signature stairs of enigmatic Italian architect Carlo Scarpa, renowned for his instinctive approach to materials. Evoking the sense of flowing down to the ground, Scarpa’s asymmetric steps inform the striking stepped feature of the handle levers and cabinet pulls. His exceptional knowledge in combining base materials with precious ones is also reflected in the dual finish. Design stylings from intricate jewellery made by Michaelis Boyd architect and designer Malaika Carr have been incorporated for a final flourish.

Joseph Giles ingenious solutions

Tech-minded Michaelis Boyd desired to create a range of products that drew focus to the junctions and invited touch, while adding an element of curiosity into how they were made. Embracing sheer craftsmanship, the Joseph Giles product development team were able to conjure some ingenious solutions towards accomplishing such a demanding brief.

The Scala was specially designed to be carefully assembled together like a brass puzzle, allowing minimal scratching of surface finishes. Pieces are attached with mechanical screws instead of an adhesive, which would be less temperature resistant and thus less durable.

Introducing the Infinity

These curvaceous door lever handles, door pulls and cabinet handles are perfectly moulded to fit the human hand like a glove, by way of distinctive finger grip contours. Forged from solid brass, they are available in classic Joseph Giles finishes with or without a leather grip.

A driving influence behind the steering wheel aesthetics of the Infinity handle range was a shared love of vintage cars. The automotive theme also parked in parallel with the history of Michaelis Boyd’s iconic The Round House property in Kensington, West London, which was formerly an MOT Centre.

When installed either side of transparent or opaque glass, the handle’s captivating curve gives the illusion of a perfect circle passing through the door, an endless quality that also reminds of the serpentine Infinity symbol.

Joseph Giles design team

Joseph Giles product development team were up to the challenge of completing the tricky 3D modelling for Michaelis Boyd’s Infinity handle design. This included careful consideration of where to position internal fastenings close to the handle shaft due to the lever immediately arching out away from the rose.

Some persistent trials by our talented leatherworker were also needed to find the optimum grip shape to stretch and form tightly around this one-of-a-kind handle design.

The Infinity lever handle features Joseph Giles’ unique rota-bearing sprung rose system, which ensures flawless operation and eliminates fears of drooping or wobbling over time. It can also be ordered with a minimalist rose, for a refined and seamless look.
