Meet Zuber – bringing inspiration to luxury hardware design

4 questions with Zuber, Joseph Giles product designer

Where do you get your inspiration from?

“Inspiration is all around us, but you have to be observant. Many times it can come from something which, at first glance, doesn’t seem to offer much interest or is something which you could easily pass by without noticing.   I might see a building with an unusual façade or a vase that has been stretched to unusual proportions or even a simple spoon.  We take these small nuggets of inspiration, developing them into themes and keynotes which can be incorporated into our own designs to create truly unique and inspired luxury architectural hardware products.”

What’s a favourite product that you’ve worked on, and why?

“One of my favourite products is our ‘Slim ribbed’ lever handle on a concealed rose [view here], it is a product which at first sight may seem to be simplistic in design, but behind the scenes a huge amount of time went into developing a understated level of elegance, this included challenges with drawings, manufacturing and eight different prototypes with refinements coming down to 0.25 of a millimetre, the satisfaction of achieving the desired result and the positive feedback received makes it all worthwhile.”

Briefly, what’s a typical day for you?

“A typical day involves an array of tasks, processes and procedures all with the goal of producing a high quality product which adheres to the Joseph Giles brand. This can include the initial conception of a product which would be drawn up using CAD software, this would progress onto prototype testing with our in house 3D prototyping facility, this initial print is passed through our dedicated design team for further refinement to ensure we produce the best possible product. A final prototype will be completed and manufacturing drawings created.”

What’s it like working at JG, really?

“Working at Joseph Giles is fantastic, there is a real culture of unity between all members from the directors and operations to the research and development team and sales, that enables us to all work cohesively in order to provide the best service to our clients. The organisation truly does invest in and encourage a forward thinking mentality, with avenues to learn and develop. This is why we are continually looking for ways to improve and ensuring we are always achieving our goals.”
